Crisis In Modakeke: Mother’s Tearful Plea After Daughter’s Disturbing Arrest By DSS

Sixty-three-year-old farmer Yemisi Akintunde shares with DANIEL AYANTOYE the distressing details surrounding the arrest of her daughter and her fiancé, Nurudeen Adesiyan, by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Modakeke, Osun State.

What is your profession?
I am a farmer.

How did your daughter get arrested?
Very early in the morning, security personnel showed up here. We had no idea they had already taken Kehinde and her fiancé. They forcibly broke our net and shattered glass. When I woke up, I was in shock and yelled! I don’t have any issues with anyone, and I was sure my children didn’t either. So, witnessing this was a complete surprise.

They pounded on our door repeatedly, and we had no choice but to open it. They brutally assaulted the two kids in the house, demanding to know where Kehinde was. I informed them she was sleeping at her fiancé’s house in Ajape. Before we opened the door, I had to call my son (Kehinde’s older brother) and the other children with me, telling them we were under attack.

As they interrogated us, my other child, Tolulope Akintunde, arrived, and they arrested him too. They asked him, “Are you a Jagaban?” He replied no, but they proceeded to put all of us in one of their vehicles. I have two children named Kehinde; I think they mistook the other one for the target they were after, which is why they came here.

What type of vehicles did the security officials arrive in, and how many were there?
They came in four vehicles, including Sienna and Hilux models. All were armed, except one person who was taking notes. There were more than twelve personnel in total. They confiscated our phones, put us in one of the vehicles, and drove us to the community school. It was there that I realized Kehinde and her fiancé, Nurudeen, along with their mother, had also been taken.

They returned our phones and instructed us to head home from the school. When I asked why they were freeing us without our children, they told me not to worry and that we were allowed to go. Even Taiye wanted to accompany them, but they began cocking their guns and threatening to shoot her.

We had to leave and walk back home. This incident occurred when people were still asleep. They attempted to arrest a man on his way to the mosque, but he was let go after insisting he was merely heading to pray and had no connection to us. No one dared to come outside due to fear.

What happened after the security personnel departed?
Since that day, we haven’t heard anything about our children; we haven’t seen them. We’ve gone everywhere, including police stations, but learned nothing about their whereabouts. We can’t reach them by phone; their number rings, but nobody answers.

It would at least bring me some peace of mind to hear from them and know they are alive. There was significant confusion as even the police mentioned they were unaware of who had arrested them. I’ve never experienced anything like this before. We don’t even know what they supposedly did. I beseech them to show us mercy since both children no longer have fathers.

Did the security personnel introduce themselves?
No, they didn’t provide any information. They just took my children away, leaving us in the dark about where they went or what they had done. They claimed the arrests were linked to a Moroccan terrorist.

Have you noticed any suspicious behavior?
I have never seen anything like that; I can vouch for my children completely. Since their father passed away 20 years ago, I’ve raised them closely. What you’re implying is entirely out of character for them.

Was there any communication with a Moroccan terrorist? Did you see her receiving unusual calls?
No, I have never witnessed her engaging in such activities.

How old is your daughter?
She is around 28 years old and works as a nurse.

What is her occupation?
She has finished her apprenticeship at a chemist and was getting ready to open her own shop in Ibadan.

Are they based in Ibadan or Modakeke?
They are primarily based in Ibadan but regularly come to Modakeke. They were in town for a wedding in Ode-Omu on November 30, 2024, which is why they came home, but they were picked up on November 29, 2024, at her mother-in-law’s residence.

Reports claim their arrest occurred on December 19, 2024. Is that accurate?
That’s false. They were arrested on Friday, November 29, 2024. My child is peaceful and never causes trouble. I am pleading with the government to show mercy; I only have two daughters, and now one has been taken away from me.
