El-Rufai was initially nominated by President Bola Tinubu for a ministerial role, but his nomination was rejected by the National Assembly, reportedly due to security concerns.

His meeting with PDP leaders has triggered widespread speculation about a potential defection, especially as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. However, neither El-Rufai nor PDP officials have provided details about their discussions.
Meanwhile, on Friday, El-Rufai joined former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on a condolence visit to the family of Chief Edwin Clark, who passed away on February 17, 2025, at age 97.
Atiku shared a video from the visit on (formerly Twitter), offering prayers and condolences.
“Today, I led a delegation, including former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, @elrufai, on a condolence visit to the family of foremost statesman and nationalist, Chief Edwin Clark,” Atiku wrote.
