Fani-Kayode, who has battled these charges for 18 years, celebrated his victory following the court’s decision to clear him of the case.
Naija News reports that the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, exonerated Fani-Kayode, ruling that the EFCC failed to prove any link between him and the alleged crime. Justice Olubumni Abike-Fadipe, in her ruling, declared that the EFCC had not established a prima facie case, leading to the former Minister’s acquittal.
The EFCC had charged Fani-Kayode with submitting forged medical reports during his prosecution for a ₦4.9 billion fraud case, which was being heard by Justice Daniel Osiagor at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Following the court’s decision, Fani-Kayode took to Facebook to share his excitement and gratitude. He thanked God for the outcome, acknowledging the 18 years of legal battles he had endured. He wrote: “It was a great day and a great victory in court today. Finally, after 18 long and difficult years of constant and consecutive criminal cases in no less than four separate courts in different parts of the country, I have won the last one and it is all over.”
He further expressed that he could now focus on his family and loved ones, concluding his post with a heartfelt reference to the words of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., saying, “FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST, THANK GOD ALMIGHTY WE ARE FREE AT LAST.”
