According to sources, the university has a student population of over 10,000, but it only has a limited number of hostels that can accommodate a fraction of the students. The result is that many students are forced to seek alternative accommodation outside the campus, which is often expensive and of poor quality. Others have resorted to sleeping in classrooms, libraries, and other public spaces on campus, as they have nowhere else to go.

The students have complained that the lack of hostel accommodation has made their academic life difficult, as they are often unable to get enough rest and are exposed to various health risks. Many have also reported cases of theft, assault, and other security breaches, as they are forced to sleep in open and vulnerable spaces.

“We are really suffering,” said a student who preferred to remain anonymous. “We have to sleep in the classrooms, and it’s not safe. The university authorities have acknowledged the accommodation crisis and have promised to take action to address the issue. In a statement, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Enr, Prof.Isaac Nathaniel Itodo, said that the university is working to provide more hostels and improve the existing ones. “We are aware of the accommodation crisis, and we are working to address it,” he said. “We have plans to construct new hostels and renovate the existing ones. We urge our students to be patient and bear with us, as we work to provide a better learning environment for them.”

However, the students are skeptical about the university’s promise, as they have been hearing similar promises for years without seeing any tangible action. They have vowed to continue to protest and advocate for their rights until the accommodation crisis is addressed.
