Justice Served: Impostor Sentenced to 6 Years for Parading as Lawyer in Delta
A Magistrate Court sitting in Otor-Udu, located within the Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, has sentenced a man identified as Alex Young Vweta Egone to six years imprisonment after he was found guilty of impersonating a legal practitioner and engaging in forgery.
According to reports, Egone was apprehended following a coordinated operation by the Udu Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association and law enforcement agencies. He had allegedly been operating within Udu and neighboring communities while presenting himself as a certified lawyer.
Upon his arrest on August 2, 2025, authorities discovered forged legal documents in his possession, including a deed of conveyance and several petitions purportedly written on behalf of clients. Investigators also recovered a fake Nigerian Bar Association stamp and seal bearing his name, as well as the Supreme Court number belonging to a legitimate lawyer. An ink pad and a stamp inscribed with his name were also found among the incriminating items.
The case, which was brought before Magistrate Court 1, saw Egone plead guilty to all charges leveled against him. The charges included multiple counts of impersonation and document forgery. He was prosecuted by legal representatives of the Nigerian Bar Association, identified as D.O. Omage and G.O. Fenfe.
The court handed down a sentence of one and a half years for each of the first three counts and two years for the fourth count. The sentences are to run concurrently, amounting to a total of six years. Egone has since been transferred to Okere Correctional Centre in Warri, where he is currently serving his sentence.
Legal professionals and observers have commended the swift handling of the matter, describing it as a strong deterrent to others attempting to exploit the legal system through fraudulent means.
