Kwara Residents Groan Amid Arbitrary Fuel Price Increase
Residents of Kwara State are facing hardship due to arbitrary fuel price increases by petrol filling stations, with prices varying between N580 and N715 per litre, depending on the point of sale……READ ALSO Kwara Government Probes Allegation Of Poisonous Meat Sale
While NNPC sells fuel at N580 per litre, major marketers like Total Energies are selling at N625. Independent marketers, however, are dispensing fuel at prices ranging from N710 to N715 per litre.
Motorists in Ilorin expressed their dismay, questioning why such arbitrary price hikes are imposed on consumers despite regulatory bodies established by the government. This situation has led to increased tariffs by Keke NAPEP, Okada, and commercial cab operators, affecting transportation costs in the state capital.
Interstate and inter-city transporters have also raised concerns about the impact of fuel price hikes on their routes, ultimately shifting the burden onto passengers.
Abdullateef Azeez, a driver on the Ilorin-Omu Aran route, highlighted the challenges of purchasing fuel at inflated prices, with costs reaching N1,200 per litre in some areas.
Tajudeen Balogun, a manager at an independent filling station in Ilorin, attributed the price surge to a decrease in fuel stock, resulting in increased demand surpassing supply. He also mentioned the anticipation surrounding the commencement of production and distribution by the Dangote Refinery as a factor influencing the market dynamics.
Balogun expressed hope for an improvement in the situation in the coming weeks or by the end of the year, especially if the Dangote Refinery starts operations.
