debts related to prior gas deliveries.

Ogaji shared the details in an interview with ireporteronline, explaining that the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) instructed gas producers to halt supplies due to escalating debt levels, which have now reached approximately ₦2.7 trillion. This interruption has triggered widespread power outages, as over 70% of Nigeria’s electricity is generated by gas-powered plants.

Despite the government’s recent payment of ₦205 billion to address some of the GenCos’ debt, a dispute between the NMDPRA and gas suppliers over the collection of a 0.5% levy on petroleum products has worsened the situation. As a result, gas suppliers have stopped delivering fuel to the plants until outstanding payments are made.

Ogaji confirmed that both the government and relevant authorities, including the presidency, are fully aware of the ongoing crisis. The suspension of gas supply has led to a severe disruption in power generation, which has only intensified the financial strain on the country’s energy sector.
