Uzee Usman Slams Northern Elite Over Lack Of Support For Kannywood

Nollywood actor Uzee Usman has attributed the slow growth of Kannywood, Nigeria’s Hausa-language film industry, to limited investment and support from wealthy individuals and political leaders in the northern region.

According to Ireporter Online, Usman made the remarks during an interview on The Morayo Show, where he highlighted the potential of Kannywood while pointing out the financial challenges affecting its expansion.

The actor stated that the industry has a rich history and strong storytelling culture but has struggled to reach greater heights due to inadequate sponsorship and investment.

Usman explained that unlike Nollywood, which receives significant backing from investors and business figures, Kannywood has not enjoyed similar levels of financial support from many northern elites.

He stressed that increased investment from wealthy northerners and political stakeholders would help strengthen the industry, create more opportunities and promote Hausa-language films on a wider platform.

Meanwhile, Usman also opened up about his experience working alongside actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele in the movie A Tribe Called Judah.

The actor revealed that playing the character Adamu was one of the most demanding roles of his career, but credited Akindele’s direction and guidance for helping the cast deliver their performances effectively.

According to him, Funke created a comfortable working environment that allowed the actors to understand their characters better while enjoying the production process.

Usman also praised Akindele’s personality, describing her as someone who treats people with respect and values those around her.

He disclosed that although they knew each other before the movie, their relationship became much closer after working together on A Tribe Called Judah, where he developed greater admiration for her professionalism and kindness.
