Tragedy in Uniform: Amotekun Officer Killed, Another Injured in Violent Showdown with Soldier

A member of the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun, has been killed and another severely injured following a violent altercation with a soldier in Ijeda-Ijesa, Osun State. According to iReporter Online, the deceased, identified as Samuel Tope, was fatally attacked during a confrontation that stemmed from tensions linked to a robbery investigation.

Sources familiar with the incident revealed that the soldier involved, Fiyinfoluwa Opejobi, had returned to his hometown to conclude marriage rites over the weekend. He was reportedly invited to the local Amotekun office on Friday for questioning after a corps operative accused him in connection with a robbery. Although he initially complied, events took a tragic turn the following day.

On Saturday, after completing his marital ceremony, Opejobi allegedly set out with two associates to confront the Amotekun officer who had made the accusation. Eyewitnesses say they found the officer at a roundabout in town and subjected him to a brutal beating that left him unconscious.

Retaliation quickly followed, as colleagues of the assaulted Amotekun officer organized a search and tracked down Opejobi and his companions to a local hotel. Eyewitness accounts indicate that a violent clash ensued at the premises. Despite wearing partial military gear, the soldier and his group were reportedly waiting outside the hotel when the Amotekun operatives arrived. It was during the encounter that Tope was fatally struck, while Opejobi sustained a head injury.

The Osun State Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Mr. Adekunle Omoyele, stated that the attack on Tope was unprovoked. According to his official briefing, Opejobi approached the Ijebu-Jesa Amotekun office dressed in camouflage, allegedly declaring his intent to “deal with” members of the security outfit. Omoyele further noted that the soldier and his accomplices ambushed Tope while he was riding a motorcycle, bludgeoning him on the head with a blunt object before fleeing the scene.

The case has been reported to both the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ijebu-Jesa and the military barracks in Ede. The police, meanwhile, have confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway. A spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, noted that the incident appeared to stem from a prior misunderstanding between the involved parties. He disclosed that both Amotekun operatives were stabbed with a jackknife during the attack, and one later died in hospital while the other remains in critical condition.

Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Nigerian Army were unsuccessful. When contacted, a senior military officer merely responded via text, advising that further enquiries be directed to the barracks.
