Sowore was arrested on Monday and taken into custody at the Intelligence Response Team facility in Abuja after rejecting the administrative bail conditions set by the police.

Court Arraignment and Protester Outcry

According to ireporteronline, Sowore is scheduled for arraignment today, January 29, 2025, before Justice Abdullah Liman at the Federal High Court in Abuja. His lawyer, Marshall Abubakar, confirmed that charges had been filed against him by the police.

Ahead of the court proceedings, protesters gathered outside the courthouse, condemning what they called an attempt to silence dissent. Demonstrators accused the government of using security forces for intimidation rather than addressing rising crime rates in the capital.

Protesters Slam Police Deployment

A protester, speaking to The Punch, criticized the security presence at the court:

“Police officers are here to intimidate peaceful protesters, yet Abuja is becoming more dangerous by the day. Instead of being deployed to combat crime, they are stationed here to harass citizens demanding justice. This shows the misplaced priorities of this government and the illegal Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.”

The protesters insisted that if no formal charges had been filed against Sowore, he should be released immediately.

“We are demanding that Sowore be brought before the court now. If there are no charges against him, his detention is illegal. Free Sowore now!” one demonstrator said.

Call to End Judicial Intimidation

Beyond Sowore’s case, the demonstrators called for an end to what they described as the misuse of the judiciary to suppress government critics.

“We demand that all politically motivated cases against government critics be dropped. Authorities should focus on real governance issues instead of wasting resources on silencing dissent,” another protester added.

Despite the heavy police presence, the protesters vowed to continue their campaign until their demands were met.
