Doyin Abiola, Nigeria’s First Female Daily Editor and MKO’s Widow, Passes Away at 78

Dr. Doyin Abiola, esteemed journalist and widow of Chief MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, has passed away. She reportedly died on Tuesday evening at 9:15 p.m. after battling an undisclosed illness.

A trailblazer in Nigeria’s media landscape, Dr. Abiola made history as the first woman to become editor and later managing director of a Nigerian daily newspaper. Her contributions to journalism and democracy, particularly during Nigeria’s most turbulent political eras, remain widely celebrated.

An alumnus of the University of Ibadan, where she earned a degree in English and Drama in 1969, she began her career at the Daily Sketch, where she penned the influential column Tiro, addressing gender and social issues. She later traveled to the United States for further studies, earning a master’s degree in journalism and, subsequently, a PhD in communications and political science from New York University in 1979.

Upon returning to Nigeria, Dr. Abiola joined the Daily Times, where she rose to become Group Features Editor and later served on the editorial board alongside media luminaries like Dele Giwa and Stanley Macebuh. Her career reached a defining moment when she became the pioneer editor of National Concord—a newspaper owned by her husband—and was later appointed its managing director/editor-in-chief in 1986.

Throughout her decades-long media career, she remained a steadfast voice for press freedom and national unity. During the annulment of the 1993 presidential election and the incarceration of her husband, Dr. Abiola endured immense personal and professional hardships, becoming a symbol of resilience amid Nigeria’s political turbulence.
