Faith Meets Science: Islamic Leaders Join National Biotech Dialogue in Nigeria

In a rare but powerful convergence of religion and science, a gathering of Islamic leaders, scientists, policymakers, and civil society groups took place in Abuja to deliberate on the role of biotechnology—particularly Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)—in addressing Nigeria’s deepening food security crisis.

The sensitization workshop, convened by the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), was described by observers as a strategic step toward integrating faith-based perspectives into the national conversation on agricultural innovation and climate resilience.

According to policy analysts present at the event, the inclusion of respected Islamic clerics was not only symbolic but instrumental in ensuring public confidence in emerging technologies. Religious leaders, especially in Muslim-majority communities, hold significant influence over social attitudes and public health decisions.

“This is a meeting of two critical arms of our society: faith and science,” noted Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, Director General of NBRDA, during his opening remarks. He emphasized that in a country where food insecurity continues to threaten millions, no safe and effective innovation should be sidelined due to misinformation or distrust.

Islamic principles mandate that food must be halal (permissible) and tayyib (pure and wholesome), concerns which have often fueled public skepticism about GMOs. Professor Mustapha reaffirmed that any biotechnology adopted in Nigeria would undergo thorough ethical and religious scrutiny to ensure alignment with these core tenets.

“It is our collective duty to guarantee that any biotechnological advancement we support upholds the sacred objectives of Shari’ah—protecting life, health, and human dignity,” he said.

Throughout the workshop, scientists and regulators presented factual evidence about the safety, benefits, and oversight of GMOs, seeking to dispel myths and misconceptions. Dr. Rose Gidado, Director of Agricultural Biotechnology at NBRDA, detailed how genetically engineered crops can directly improve yields, reduce pesticide use, and mitigate losses from pests and diseases—challenges that continue to plague Nigerian farmers.

She highlighted examples such as herbicide-tolerant crops that promote soil conservation, virus-resistant plant varieties that improve resilience, and genetically modified fruits engineered to extend shelf life, thereby reducing waste and boosting farmer incomes.

Experts also emphasized the stringent biosafety protocols in place. Dr. Agnes Asagbra, Director General of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), reassured attendees that every genetically modified product approved in Nigeria undergoes rigorous risk assessment and safety testing in accordance with international standards.

“Nigeria has one of the most comprehensive biosafety systems in Africa,” she noted, underlining that public health and environmental safety remain non-negotiable.

Rather than a one-sided lecture, the session was designed as an open dialogue, giving religious leaders space to ask probing questions and voice their concerns. Many inquiries focused on whether GMOs constitute interference with nature and whether their long-term impacts on human health and the environment are fully understood.

The most significant outcome of the event, however, may have been the atmosphere of mutual respect and shared purpose. According to stakeholders in attendance, the event demonstrated that faith and science can coexist and complement each other in tackling national challenges.

Professor Mustapha reiterated that the engagement of religious figures was not a one-time gesture but a strategic policy direction. “We are committed to continuous engagement with all societal pillars—faith-based leaders, traditional authorities, lawmakers, and educators—because these are the voices people trust most.”

Dr. Gidado echoed this sentiment in her closing remarks, saying that shifting the public narrative around biotechnology will depend heavily on the credibility of community leaders. “When clerics understand and support the science, their communities are more likely to embrace it too,” she added.

As Nigeria confronts the intertwined challenges of food insecurity, climate change, and population growth, this inclusive approach to technology adoption may prove pivotal. By engaging those who shape moral, spiritual, and cultural values, the country is paving the way for a more informed and united response to the nation’s food crisis.

“This is not just about crops or laboratories,” concluded Professor Mustapha. “It’s about trust, shared values, and building a future where innovation serves humanity without compromising our deepest beliefs.”
