Former Minister Calls For State Of Emergency In Osun, Criticizes Governor Adeleke’s Leadership
A former Minister of Police Affairs, Oyewale Adesiyan, has urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Osun State, citing ongoing unrest, political instability, and communal clashes in the region.
In a statement issued on Monday in Osogbo, the state capital, Adesiyan referenced Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution to justify his call. He argued that the political chaos in the state, compounded by an ineffective governor, has made it necessary to invoke the constitutional provision to restore order….READ MORE…
Adesiyan explained, “Over the past few months, we have witnessed a breakdown of law and order in Osun State. This began with a local government crisis in which the governor defied the Court of Appeal’s ruling and attempted to elevate the state High Court’s decision above the highest court in the country. When the chief executive disregards the law, it leads to anarchy, resulting in the deaths of innocent people, including the reinstated Chairman of Irewole Local Government, Remi Abass.”
He further criticized the current leadership in the state, suggesting that Governor Adeleke’s handling of the situation has been inadequate. “Given the political instability and the governor’s incompetence in managing the fragile state of affairs, I believe it is essential to invoke the relevant section of the constitution to restore peace and stability,” Adesiyan added.
Adesiyan also expressed regret over the loss of lives during the ongoing council crisis and the recent communal clashes, which have resulted in both fatalities and displacements of many residents.
