HYPREP Shuts Down Ogoniland as Environment Minister Balarabe Abbas Lawal, Regional Development Minister Abubakar Momoh Commission Key Water Projects
In a landmark move aimed at reshaping the environmental and infrastructural landscape of Ogoniland, the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment and the Federal Ministry of Regional Development, took decisive action on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, effectively shutting down all activities in the region as dignitaries stormed the area to commission crucial water projects.
The high-profile delegation, led by the Honourable Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, and the Honourable Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh FNSE, arrived in Ogoniland for a full-scale inspection and commissioning exercise. Accompanied by the HYPREP Project Coordinator, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, and the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator, Mr. Mohamed Malick Fall, the team assessed the progress of multiple environmental rehabilitation projects, reinforcing the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to restoring the region’s ecosystem and providing sustainable solutions to decades-old water contamination.
Massive Inspections & Environmental Rehabilitation Efforts
The day kicked off with an extensive inspection tour of the Ajeokpori and Obaji-Oken underground water remediation sites (Lot 2, 15) in Ogale, where the ministers and key stakeholders assessed the remediation efforts aimed at reviving clean water sources.
Following this, the team made a strategic stop at the Ogoni Specialist Hospital in Kpite, Tai LGA, to inspect the facility’s upgrades as part of the broader plan to enhance healthcare services for the region’s residents.
The tour progressed to Patrick’s Waterside in Bodo, where dignitaries participated in the symbolic planting of mangroves at the Bomu Mangrove Restoration site. This ecological restoration effort forms part of HYPREP’s broader strategy to rejuvenate the natural landscape devastated by decades of hydrocarbon pollution.
Historic Commissioning of Beeri and Bunu Water Projects
The climax of the day was the grand commissioning of two major water projects that will significantly transform the lives of thousands in Ogoniland.
Beeri Water Project, Khana LGA
At the Beeri Water Project site in Khana LGA, Hon. Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, led the official commissioning ceremony in the presence of an elite assembly of stakeholders and community leaders. The event witnessed an outpouring of goodwill messages from key figures.
Bunu Water Project, Tai LGA
From Khana, the team moved to Tai LGA for another groundbreaking moment as the Bunu Water Project was officially launched. The commissioning was led by UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Mohamed Malick Fall, marking yet another milestone in HYPREP’s ambitious effort to deliver potable water to Ogoni residents.
A New Dawn for Ogoniland
The overwhelming presence of government officials, international partners, and local leaders underscored the significance of this intervention. The commissioning of these water projects is a direct response to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Report’s recommendations on the Ogoni cleanup, fulfilling a long-overdue promise to the people.
HYPREP’s relentless drive under the leadership of Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey is setting a new precedent in environmental remediation and community restoration. With the backing of the Federal Government, Ogoniland is now witnessing the dawn of a sustainable future, free from decades of water pollution and ecological neglect.
