Party members at the meeting chanted, “No vacancy in Aso Rock”, reinforcing their support for his re-election bid.
The meeting, which saw the familiar chorus of “On your mandate, we shall stand” ring out upon Tinubu’s arrival, was led by Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, who proposed the confidence vote. This motion was seconded by former Edo State Governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
Tinubu, visibly pleased throughout the session, addressed party members, emphasizing that the country was on the path to economic recovery, citing the declining cost of foodstuffs as a key indicator.
During the gathering, the president instructed the APC National Working Committee (NWC) to establish reconciliation committees nationwide to engage discontented members and resolve internal conflicts.
APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, revealed that upon assuming office, he inherited a debt of N8,987,874,663, stemming from pre-election legal battles and election-related expenses.
Meanwhile, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, responded to recent criticisms from former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, urging him to uphold the dignity befitting his status and refrain from “grievance-driven commentaries.”
Notable absentees from the high-profile NEC gathering included:
- Former President Muhammadu Buhari
- Ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo
- Former Minister Rotimi Amaechi
- Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai
- Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan
Their absence has fueled speculation about divisions within the ruling party, particularly following El-Rufai’s recent public criticisms of APC leadership and Tinubu’s policies.
Acknowledging the vote of confidence as a challenge to deliver more results, Tinubu pledged to focus on food security, investment, and economic development.
He reassured party leaders and Nigerians that his government was committed to stabilizing the economy despite global economic turbulence, stating:
“Food prices are dropping as Ramadan approaches. The world is facing economic shocks, but Nigeria is seeing growth and stability. We are making progress.”
Tinubu urged party officials to strengthen internal unity, directing NEC to establish state-level committees to mediate disputes among party members.
Ganduje highlighted ongoing reconciliation efforts within the party, announcing the defection of prominent political figures, including:
- Ex-Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim
- Former Labour Party Gubernatorial Candidate Edwin Nkwegu
- Senator Uche Ekwunife
He noted that APC’s membership drive was yielding positive results, bolstering the party’s dominance ahead of 2027.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to supporting Tinubu’s reforms, while House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas praised the president’s courage in making tough but necessary policy decisions.
At the end of the session, a motion for indefinite adjournment was moved by House of Representatives member Patrick Ndubeze and seconded by Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi.
Despite internal party challenges and notable absences, the APC leadership remains firmly behind Tinubu as he prepares for 2027. The vote of confidence signals strong party unity, but lingering grievances and El-Rufai’s outbursts indicate potential cracks in the ruling party’s foundation.
