Wild Encounter: Crocodile, Python, and Cub Seized from Former AGF’s Home

Amid rising public anxiety, a python, crocodile, and lion cub were recently evacuated from the private residence of Nigeria’s former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris. The operation, carried out by wildlife officials, followed reports of an escaped python that caused panic across the Daneji, Mandawari, Kabara, and other adjoining neighborhoods in Kano State.

According to IReporter Online, the incident prompted swift intervention from the Kano Zoological authorities, who confirmed that the wild creatures have now been safely relocated to the Kano Zoo. The Managing Director of the zoo, Sadik Kura Muhammad, disclosed during a radio interview that Mr. Idris voluntarily handed over the animals to prevent further alarm after the escape incident heightened public fear.

While addressing the legality of the matter, the zoo director stated that the former government official possesses valid documentation authorizing him to keep certain wild species in his custody. He cited the provisions of the Wild Animal Law, which permits individuals to domesticate select wildlife species, provided they are not classified as endangered.

Muhammad emphasized that although the animals were exotic, they had not posed any immediate threat before their evacuation. He also noted that species considered endangered—such as parrots and vultures—are strictly reserved for conservation purposes within zoological facilities, not private ownership.

The presence of such dangerous animals in a residential area has reignited concerns over the regulation and monitoring of private wildlife ownership in Nigeria, especially within densely populated urban zones. At the time this report was filed, the former Accountant General had yet to make a public statement regarding the matter.
