Grave Risk for ₦2,000: NIMC Says Nigerians Exchanging NIN for Cash

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians against selling their National Identification Number (NIN) and personal data for any financial inducement, however small. This advisory follows growing concerns over widespread attempts by unscrupulous individuals to exploit citizens’ private information for profit.

According to a statement released over the weekend by NIMC spokesperson, Kayode Adegoke, the commission has observed an alarming trend in which unsuspecting individuals are offered between ₦1,500 and ₦2,000 in exchange for their personal data—including their NIN—which is later resold to third parties, particularly within the fintech sector, for up to ₦5,000.

Describing the scheme as not only fraudulent but also a significant national security threat, NIMC emphasized that the Commission will not be liable for any misuse of personal information willingly disclosed by citizens for monetary gain.

The agency reaffirmed its position that Nigerians must not share their NIN or related details with unauthorized persons or organizations. It further noted that any NIN used to access services must undergo strict verification protocols before being accepted.

To enhance the security and privacy of personal data, the commission urged the public to download the NINAuth App, available on both Apple iOS and Google Play Store. The app provides users with greater control over their data, ensuring more secure authentication and access to identity-related services.

The Commission’s remarks follow earlier alerts by law enforcement agencies on the growing black market for identity credentials, which criminals often exploit for fraudulent financial transactions and identity theft.
