50,000 Living with HIV In Kogi As Awareness Campaigns Target Hard-To-Reach Areas

Speaking during a road walk in Lokoja to mark the 2024 World AIDS Day, Anate noted that 36,066 of those living with the virus are currently receiving treatment. The event was organized by the Centre for Integrated Health Programmes (CIHP) in partnership with KOSACA.

“We are intensifying efforts to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS and raising awareness in communities, including hard-to-reach areas,” Anate said. He commended the state government under Alhaji Usman Ododo for supporting treatment programs and ensuring that HIV-positive pregnant women deliver HIV-negative babies.

Anate also called on the governor to sign the recently passed Anti-Stigma HIV Law, which he believes will encourage those living with HIV to disclose their status without fear of discrimination.

The Kogi State Technical Lead for CIHP, Inyama Lawrencia, highlighted the challenge of mother-to-child HIV transmission and urged pregnant women to attend antenatal care to know their HIV status. She pointed out that financial constraints often prevent women from accessing these critical services.

Efforts are ongoing to address these challenges and expand access to treatment and prevention programs, especially in the state’s remote and underserved areas.
