According to Lt-Col Mavela Masondo, a police spokesperson, the incident occurred around 10:30 pm on Friday, May 10, 2024, as the child went out to greet his father, Ditebogo Phalane, upon his arrival home.

Reports suggest that an unconfirmed number of armed suspects hijacked Phalane’s white Toyota bakkie and subsequently shot the innocent 5-year-old boy, who later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

The heartbreaking news was shared by Phalane’s cousin, Gift Makoti, who expressed shock and outrage at the senseless violence. Makoti described how Phalane was robbed of his vehicle while in the company of his young son, leading to the tragic loss of the child’s life.

Makoti’s post on X included poignant photos of Ditebogo Phalane Jr. with his father, capturing moments of joy and happiness that have now been shattered by the devastating incident. He emphasized the deep bond between father and son, noting that Phalane was inconsolable following the loss of his beloved child.

The heartbreaking tragedy has sparked a wave of sorrow and anger on social media, with many expressing disbelief and condemning the perpetrators of such heinous acts of violence against innocent victims, especially children.

In response to the tragedy, numerous individuals have come forward to offer support and assistance, including contributions towards erecting a tombstone for the young boy, symbolizing a community united in grief and solidarity in the face of tragedy.
