Captain Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Free State, disclosed the heartbreaking incident on Friday, May 10, 2024. Reports suggest that a disagreement between the two boys escalated, leading the nine-year-old to retrieve a knife from his home and stab the 10-year-old.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, finding the victim in his school uniform with a stab wound to his chest. Despite efforts to save him, the 10-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Both boys were Grade 4 learners from different primary schools in Brandfort.
Following the tragedy, the nine-year-old was handed over to his parents for intervention by social workers, while the incident was registered as an inquest by authorities.
Education officials also expressed their shock and grief over the incident. Kamogelo Leepile, the deceased, attended WSM Malotle Primary School, and the suspect, a Grade 4 learner from Monamodi Primary School, allegedly stabbed him three times.
According to reports, the suspect’s mother had previously raised concerns about her child being bullied by the victim and his brother. The incident has prompted calls for increased safety measures in schools and a crackdown on bullying.
The Free State Education MEC, Makalo Mohale, condemned the incident as a “travesty,” emphasizing the need for schools to be safe environments for all learners and teachers. Psycho-social services have been deployed to provide counseling and support to affected students and staff.
