Just In: Lagos-Assembly Demands Health Law-Activation To Combat Cholera-Outbreak
The Lagos State House of Assembly has called for the activation of specific sections of the State health law to curb the spread of cholera. The lawmakers urged relevant government offices to launch a massive enlightenment campaign to educate residents on the best practices to prevent the spread of the bacteria.
Naija News reports that the cholera outbreak has affected several local governments, resulting in 29 deaths as of Monday. Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, presided over the session and called for an investigation into the source of the outbreak to enable better government strategies for a solution.
“We must encourage the government to continue to sensitise the people in every language that is spoken in Lagos,” Dr. Obasa said, supporting calls from his colleagues for authorities to maintain drainages, canals, and ensure proper sewage systems.
Raising a motion on the issue, the chairman of the health committee, Hon. Lawal Aina Musbau, urged the government to mobilize resources and personnel urgently to combat the disease. He emphasized the need for resident education on basic cleanliness and called on sanitation officers to effectively carry out their duties.
Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh and Gbolahan Yishawu also highlighted the importance of providing drinkable water to residents as a key measure to prevent the spread or recurrence of the disease.
