Just In: Lagos State Launches-Smart Health Information-Platform To Revolutionize-Healthcare Data Management (Details)

Lagos State has unveiled the Smart Health Information Platform (SHIP) to revolutionize data transmission and management across all state-owned healthcare facilities. This secure digital cloud initiative is a government-led effort in collaboration with eClat, a health technology company, and Interswitch Limited, aimed at facilitating seamless patient data movement and enhancing digital transformation in the state’s healthcare system.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu supervised the signing of the Concession Agreement between the Office of Public Private Partnership (PPP) and the Digital Health Platform Limited, witnessed by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro.

The digital system will eradicate loose data sharing and provide improved protection and privacy for patients’ information. Sanwo-Olu described the innovation as a ‘transformational step’ in simplifying data collection and usage in the health sector, emphasizing that the government has made a ‘bold move’ in leveraging technology for efficient health delivery.

The Governor highlighted that this innovation would enable proper resource allocation and empower decision-makers to analyze and evaluate the impact of health interventions. “We have seen global trends in using technology as a backbone to manage healthcare delivery and assess lifestyle changes in the population. Smart Health Information Platform is our bold step to transform healthcare and ease cumbersome data processing in our hospitals,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

He assured the public of the database’s full protection, emphasizing the secure and private handling of data collected through the platform.

Commissioner for Health Prof. Akin Abayomi noted that the state-owned general hospitals alone generated seven million contact data, aside from data collected by Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs), tertiary health institutions, and private hospitals. He highlighted the need for a robust digital infrastructure to manage this data, eliminate repetition, and reduce errors.

“When the data are in one place, we can collect trends on the health-seeking behavior of Lagosians. This is critical for policy definition and resource application. The platform is not only for patient care but also for policymakers,” Abayomi said.

Group Managing Director of Interswitch, Mitchell Elegbe, assured that the platform would facilitate free data flow between health institutions and provide seamless payment options for patients, without compromising data security. “This partnership is something we won’t take lightly,” he promised.
