“A Modern Olubadan For A Modern City” – Falola Hails Ladoja’s Forthcoming Reign

Renowned Nigerian historian and Professor of African Studies, Toyin Falola, has expressed confidence that the ascension of Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland will usher in a new era of modernisation for the historic city.

Highlighting Ladoja’s extensive political experience, business acumen, and stature as a seasoned statesman, Falola outlined steps that could help the incoming monarch achieve his vision of a modern Ibadan. The scholar, who currently holds the Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities at the University of Texas, shared these insights while addressing reporters after delivering the Olubadan Coronation Lecture in honour of Oba Ladoja.

The lecture, titled “Ibadan in History: Issues in Tradition and Modernity,” took place at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, and drew traditional leaders, community heads, scholars, researchers, women’s groups, and other notable figures. Reflecting on his preparation for the lecture, Falola revealed that he initially considered producing a 400-page manuscript, which ultimately evolved into a book outlining practical measures to realise Ladoja’s ambition for a modern Ibadan state.

University of Ibadan Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, congratulated Oba Ladoja on his ascension, expressing optimism that his leadership would foster progress, unity, and development across Ibadanland. Chief Bayo Oyero, Chairman of the Coronation Committee, noted that the pre-coronation lecture was an unprecedented event in the city’s history, underscoring the significance of Ladoja’s forthcoming reign.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also extended his congratulations to Oba Ladoja, commending him on his impending coronation and advising the monarch to distinguish between traditional authority and political engagement. In a statement from New York, where he was attending the 80th United Nations General Assembly, Obasanjo emphasized the need for humility, patience, divine guidance, and tolerance to succeed as a traditional ruler.

Preparations for the coronation are set to be further boosted by the expected presence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Advance members of the Presidency were sighted at the recently upgraded Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, highlighting the facility’s readiness to handle high-profile flights. The airport, closed for renovation in March 2024, has now been upgraded to international standards—a move Governor Seyi Makinde said will enhance air travel, strengthen connectivity, and stimulate economic growth for the state.
