Lagos Police Move To Arraign NURTW Boss In Dispatch Rider’s Fatal Incident

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that Shamsideen Adio, popularly known as Shameleon, a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), is set to be arraigned on Friday over the alleged killing of a dispatch rider on Lagos Island.

Adio, 55, was apprehended following a violent altercation on Tapa Street, Lagos Island, on September 17, 2025. Reports indicate that the rider had allegedly scratched Adio’s vehicle, prompting the union leader and his associates to assault him. Eyewitnesses said the victim was repeatedly struck with a helmet and fists until he collapsed. He was later taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Bababseyi Oluseyi, stated that Adio is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, pending his arraignment. “The suspect is currently in custody and will be arraigned on Friday,” Oluseyi confirmed.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has also intervened, calling for justice against Adio and his accomplices. Adewale Adedeji, Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, condemned the killing, describing it as a grave violation of human life. He said, “We can just imagine a dispatch rider who left home to earn a living not returning because someone who thinks they are above the law decided to take his life. The sanctity of human life has no substitute, and Shamsideen’s case must be handled to serve as a lesson.”
