Malawi President Chakwera Accepts Election Loss, Paving Way For Peaceful Transition

Malawi’s President, Lazarus Chakwera, on Wednesday formally conceded defeat in last week’s presidential election, acknowledging that his challenger, former President Peter Mutharika, had secured what he termed an “insurmountable lead.”

In a national address delivered hours before the electoral commission was set to release the final results of the September 16 poll, Chakwera confirmed that he had already extended his congratulations to Mutharika. “A few minutes ago, I called Professor Mutharika to wish him well. It was clear that my rival Peter Mutharika has an insurmountable lead over me,” he stated.

Chakwera, 70, who assumed office in 2020 after defeating Mutharika, had faced growing criticism over economic challenges and unfulfilled campaign promises. Rising inflation, which reached 33 per cent, and the skyrocketing cost of staple foods and fertilizers fueled voter discontent in the agriculture-dependent nation. Observers also cited his perceived indecisiveness, failure to curb corruption, and limited job creation as factors that undermined his reelection bid.

Despite the setback, Chakwera urged citizens to remain calm and assured them of a peaceful transfer of power. “In the days that remain, I want you to know that I am committed to a peaceful transfer of power. I know that many of you who supported my campaign for reelection will be disappointed,” he added.
