Two people, including a serving police officer and a female passenger, lost their lives on Tuesday after a 40-foot container truck toppled onto a commercial tricycle at Ijora Causeway, Lagos.

Authorities from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that the truck, bearing registration number XP 368 AKD, lost control while attempting a risky manoeuvre beneath the Ijora Bridge, crushing the tricycle, which bore registration KJA 364 QN.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki confirmed that the accident claimed the lives of two passengers instantly. The police officer’s body was transported to a mortuary in Yaba, while relatives of the female victim were seen at the scene recovering her remains.

Two others, including the tricycle driver, survived but sustained severe fractures to both legs. They were immediately transported to Jimsan Hospital, Gasikiya, Ijora, by operatives of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

Security personnel from Badia, Trinity, and Kirikiri Police Divisions were deployed to prevent onlookers from setting the container ablaze and to facilitate crowd control, ensuring emergency teams could carry out rescue operations safely.

Bakare-Oki extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. He commended the prompt and professional response of emergency and security personnel, which he said prevented further casualties.

He also urged truck drivers to exercise caution, particularly when navigating bridges, intersections, and busy roads, stressing that extreme vigilance is necessary to avoid such preventable tragedies.
