Why I Chose Not To Involve The Military In My Oil Bunkering Investigation – Soyombo

Investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo explained that he opted not to involve the Nigerian military in his recent investigation into crude oil bunkering in the Niger Delta..READ MORE.. alleging that some military operatives are complicit with the bunkerers. He made these statements during an interview on Channels Television on Friday.

Soyombo was previously detained by the Nigerian Army for three days after being arrested during a raid on a site linked to illegal bunkering.

He was ultimately released following widespread attention on social media about his arrest. In discussing his investigation, Soyombo cited the alleged involvement of certain military personnel in oil bunkering as a key reason for his decision to work independently.

“The crucial point to highlight is that illegal oil bunkerers bribe security personnel from various agencies to facilitate their operations. That’s the real issue—those tasked with stopping bunkering are often in league with those engaged in it; that’s why I could not involve the military,” he stated.

Soyombo further claimed that his cover was compromised by some military members, who informed the illegal bunkerers about his activities.

“These individuals knew everything about me, even though I was in detention and hadn’t communicated with anyone else. In fact, I wasn’t allowed to use my phone until just before my release on Friday evening. This raises the question of how the illegal bunkerers had such detailed information about me, reinforcing my decision from the outset to exclude the army,” he commented.

Despite his accusations against certain military personnel, Soyombo acknowledged that there are individuals within the military who are genuinely committed to combating illegal oil bunkering.
