A Nigerian lawyer, Dammy Esquire, has urged women to prioritize buying and securing properties in their own names, stressing that marriage may not last forever. According to Ireporter Online, the legal practitioner shared the advice in a post on her official X handle, where she cautioned women against relying solely on marital stability when making financial decisions.

In her words, marriage can face challenges such as divorce, separation, or even polygamy, hence women must prepare for such possibilities. She emphasized that while supporting a husband’s projects can be an act of love, it should not be mistaken as a guarantee of loyalty or permanence in marriage.

Dammy further noted that property ownership is not what sustains a marriage, but rather love, wisdom, and mutual effort. She explained that if a husband decides to add his wife’s name to his property, it should be seen as his personal choice, not an entitlement.

Her advice has since sparked wide debate online, drawing mixed reactions. Some commentators agreed that financial independence gives women peace of mind and prevents them from being trapped in unhappy marriages. Others argued that Nigerian law already treats assets acquired during marriage as communal property, questioning the need for women to acquire separate assets.

While some insisted that both men and women should protect themselves financially, others maintained that mutual respect, trust, and communication remain the true pillars of marriage, not property or money.
