Oyo Fire Service Expresses Concern Over Increase In Petrol Tanker Accidents

The Oyo State Fire Service has expressed serious concern about the frequent petrol tanker accidents occurring within the state, which have resulted in tragic loss of life.

Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, addressed the media on Thursday in Ibadan, highlighting petrol tanker accidents as a significant challenge facing the agency. He noted that these incidents have become alarmingly common, raising serious concerns due to the accompanying loss of life and substantial property damage, amounting to millions of naira.

Akinyinka urged the petrol tanker drivers’ association to encourage their members to exercise greater caution on the roads and to refrain from driving when fatigued.

He emphasized that it is inappropriate for petrol tanker drivers and other motorists to operate vehicles while tired, advising that anyone operating heavy machinery or driving should take necessary breaks to ensure they are alert when continuing their work or travel.

“I urge drivers to ensure their vehicles are well-maintained before transporting petrol or diesel,” he stated. “The losses we are experiencing cannot be easily replaced. Just yesterday, two lives were lost in a petrol tanker accident, and these individuals likely had plans for the upcoming Easter or Eld-Kabir celebrations.
