In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, tensions escalated as police reportedly assaulted several protesters and used tear gas to disperse the crowd. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sowore expressed outrage over the violent actions against demonstrators, accusing the police of disregarding human rights.

Sowore, who was the 2023 presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), claimed the protesters were attacked without provocation. He criticized the police for their lack of professionalism, stating, “Today was supposed to be the day the police proved they are for the people. Instead, they failed miserably. They attacked us unprovoked, showed no tolerance, and violated human rights.”

He continued, “They arrested three individuals today, including a journalist. They were made to lie in a drainage, tear-gassed, and beaten with planks from their placards.”

Sowore’s remarks followed the harsh treatment of demonstrators, further amplifying concerns over police conduct during public protests in Nigeria.
