Tear Gas And Tension: Turaki Storms PDP Secretariat, Vows To Defend Democracy At All Costs
According to Ireporter Online, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Taminu Turaki, has declared that his faction is prepared to make any sacrifice necessary to safeguard democratic principles within the party. Turaki made the remark on Tuesday while addressing journalists after he, alongside Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, pushed their way into the venue of the PDP National Executive Committee meeting.
Turaki insisted that his group would not hesitate to seek the intervention of the international community if it became necessary to protect the party’s democratic structure. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, warning that any collapse of democratic governance would have grave consequences for the country.
He maintained that his faction was ready to risk everything to ensure that democracy thrives. Despite being confronted with tear gas allegedly deployed by unidentified individuals rather than the police, Turaki said the intimidation would not stop them from asserting their mandate. He stressed that his team had reclaimed access to the party’s national secretariat at Wadata Plaza and would continue to provide leadership from there.
Reports indicate that tension erupted earlier at the PDP headquarters in Abuja following attempts by two factions to hold separate meetings. The National Working Committee elected in Ibadan over the weekend and another faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had both scheduled meetings for Tuesday. Members of the pro-Wike faction, led by National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, arrived first, while Turaki’s faction was later prevented from entering the premises upon arrival.
