Award-winning singer Tiwa Savage has shed new light on the sexual harassment many female artistes face in the Nigerian music industry, revealing that unethical demands from male executives continue to hinder women seeking genuine career advancement.

According to Ireporter Online, the global music star spoke during a session at Entertainment Week Africa, where she narrated personal encounters that exposed the widespread exploitation embedded in the industry’s power structures.

Savage explained that early in her career, she was repeatedly pressured to comply with requests framed as “mandatory” visits to influential male industry figures before she could be considered for performances. She recalled being warned that without personally meeting certain “chairmen,” she would never make it onto particular show lineups.

The singer further recounted losing a major endorsement deal after refusing to accompany one of the company’s stakeholders on a trip to Dubai, describing the incident as a painful moment that revealed how some executives prioritized exploiting her body over appreciating her musical talent.

According to her, the experience marked a defining moment that forced her to confront the harsh reality of how female entertainers are often objectified in the industry. She emphasized that while elements of her image were part of her branding strategy, some male gatekeepers misinterpreted it as an open invitation for inappropriate advances.

Savage noted that these encounters made her realize that certain industry players saw her physical appearance before her artistry, a situation she said ultimately “hurt” her because it overshadowed her genuine creativity and professionalism.
