Kashim Shettima The Perfect Gentleman Well Loved By Northern Christians, A Tale Of A Presidential Contest

As we collectively march toward a new phase in our nationhood, Nigerians are eager to know who will represent their various interests in the next dispensation. Political parties, on the other hand, are citizens’ trustees because they own the vehicle for realizing the dreams of a great and prosperous nation.

In order to present Nigerians with a presidential team that can lead the country to the eagerly awaited promised land, political parties from across the federation that are vying for the presidency have finally completed the process of nominating their Presidential and Vice-presidential candidates.

Politicians, on the other hand, play a critical role in the democratic process, which has a direct impact on our lives. They are expected to do everything possible to improve their primary constituencies and the general welfare of the people; they represent the hopes and aspirations of every individual in their constituencies, as well as their interests.

In other words, a politician is expected to be a gentleman with the following qualities: intelligence, experience, goal-setting, honesty, God-fearing, loving, trustworthiness, and decision-making.

On Sunday, the APC’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, named Alhaji Kashim Shettima as his running mate making it a Muslim-Muslim ticket, and Nigerians have since been reacting to the nomination.

Surprisingly, the Christian bloc is among those in the North who have endorsed Shettima as Bola Tinubu’s running mate.

The first to speak out in support of Shettima’s exemplary character toward Christians was no other personality than the Borno State CAN Chairman, Bishop Naga Williams Mohammed whose support was clear and unambiguous.

Hear how he put it succinctly.

“My brothers, those who are not from Borno State may not know, but you and I know better. In the history of Borno State, there is no Governor that has been fair to the Christian Community in this State as much as Governor Kashim Shettima. I am saying this in the presence of God Almighty and this is nothing but the truth. Governor Shettima, in the history of Borno, is the only Governor that has sponsored highest number of Christian Pilgrims every year since 2011.”

He also mentioned Shettima’s compassion for the Christian community, citing Gwoza as a reference point when the Christian community was in crisis after Boko Haram sacked the Christian locals. He claimed Shettima’s dedication to alleviating their plight was unwavering.

Then next came the tactical endorsement by the President, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama.

The Archbishop of Maiduguri said Shettima was a person who was open and fair to adherents of all religious groups, and Christian leaders from all denominations who live in the State can attest to this.
There are a ton of testimonials from other religious leaders who reside in Borno State that the former governor, who is now the APC’s vice presidential candidate, is not obtuse and limited in thought.

A look at Shettima’s administration when he was the governor of Borno State revealed that he appointed Nigerians from all over the country to his close cabinet.

His SA for media and strategy was Isa Gusau, who was from Zamfara, and his SA for intercommunity relations was Kester Ogualili, who was from Anambra State. Usman Majidadi Kumo, a native of Gombe State was SSA, Radio. Christopher Godwin Akaba, who is from Delta State, served as his SSA on Special Duties.

Ahmed Ishaq Ningi was the SSA, New Media and he is from Bauchi State. Lanre Obadiah was his SA on Social Investment and he is from Kwara State.  Victor Izekor, was the SA on Social investment  and he’s from Abia State. Also Shettima had  Jack Vicent who was a top SSA who was from  Benue State.

The 2023 presidential elections will undoubtedly be a numbers game, and the APC is doing everything it can to get the numbers while providing credible and competent leadership. In the coming weeks, it will be clear how far Tinubu and Shettima’s candidacy will go in securing the presidency for the APC.
