Heartbreak In Rabat: Super Eagles Crash Out Of 2026 World Cup After DR Congo Thriller
According to Ireporter Online, Nigeria’s bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a painful end on Sunday night after the Super Eagles were defeated by DR Congo in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout in Rabat, Morocco.
The CAF play-off decider ended 1-1 after extra time, but DR Congo prevailed 4-3 on penalties to advance to the intercontinental playoffs. The result means Nigeria will miss the World Cup for the second consecutive tournament.
Frank Onyeka opened the scoring for Nigeria in the third minute, completing a well-worked team move that briefly settled early nerves. However, DR Congo grew stronger as the game progressed and found an equaliser in the 32nd minute through Meschack Elia, who pounced after the Super Eagles lost possession while attempting to build from the back.
The match became increasingly tight afterward, with both teams creating notable chances. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali produced several crucial saves to keep Nigeria in the contest, including a dramatic late stop to deny Chancel Mbemba at the end of extra time. Nigeria could have restored their lead, but substitute Tolu Arokodare headed over from close range.
With no winner after 120 minutes, the game went to penalties where the tension escalated. Nigeria fell behind early after misses from Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon, though Nwabali briefly revived hopes with two impressive saves. In sudden death, Semi Ajayi’s effort was stopped by Timothy Fayulu, giving DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba the decisive opportunity, which he converted emphatically to seal the victory and ignite jubilant celebrations among the Congolese players and supporters.
