Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the suspended Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), has been sentenced to eight years in prison for embezzlement — a conviction that comes months after he became the focus of international scandal over leaked s*x tapes involving the spouses of other senior officials.

According to IReporter Online, the Bioko provincial court found Engonga guilty of misappropriating state funds by fraudulently claiming work-related travel expenses, which he then used for personal purposes. The court’s decision was relayed by Hilario Mitogo, the Supreme Court’s press director, who shared the details with reporters via WhatsApp.

Engonga, nicknamed “Bello,” stood trial with five other senior officials accused of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars in the oil-rich Central African country.

According to IReporter Online, some of the explicit recordings—allegedly filmed in his own finance ministry office—surfaced online last November, drawing widespread attention while he was still in custody awaiting trial.

The scandal sparked a storm of social media reactions, including parody songs, memes, and dances mocking Engonga, and even a fictional virility supplement dubbed “Balthazariem.” In addition to the prison term, the court has also imposed a $220,000 fine on him, according to IReporter Online.
