Presidency Slams PDP Chief For Public Appeal To U.S. Over Party Crisis

According to Ireporter Online, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has strongly criticized the newly appointed chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, following his public appeal to former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the party’s internal crisis.

Turaki, who addressed journalists on Tuesday after entering the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja amid tensions between rival factions, called on Trump and other international powers to intervene to “save Nigeria’s democracy.” He described the crisis within the opposition party as a threat to the broader democratic stability of the country, stating that the situation extended beyond internal politics.

“I want to call on President Trump; what is at stake is not just genocide against Nigerian Christians. He should come and save democracy in Nigeria. Democracy is under threat. I’m calling on all other developed nations: come and save Nigeria, come and save democracy,” Turaki said during the media briefing.

The comments followed clashes between security operatives and supporters of opposing factions at Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

Responding to Turaki’s remarks, Onanuga described the statement as “outrageous and unacceptable,” asserting that such appeals constitute a betrayal of national sovereignty. “We shall never forget this video: the day a Nigerian politician committed high treason for calling for a foreign invasion of Nigeria, all because of an intra-party dispute,” he wrote, emphasizing that internal political disagreements should never warrant external intervention.
