Relief For Nigerians As Cooking Gas Price Falls By 17.4%

The average cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, declined by 17.4 per cent month-on-month to ₦11,875 in August 2025, compared to ₦14,375 recorded in July. On a year-on-year basis, the retail price also fell by 16.7 per cent from ₦14,261.57 during the same period in 2024.
Market surveys indicate that the price of 1kg of LPG currently ranges between ₦950 and ₦1,020 across different locations, reflecting slight variations based on region.
The latest Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) also revealed a mixed trend. The report showed that in July 2025, the average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder fell marginally by 1.91 per cent month-on-month to ₦20,609.48, from ₦21,010.56 in June.
A state-by-state breakdown indicated significant disparities in pricing. Adamawa, Rivers, and Taraba recorded the highest average prices at ₦22,528.39, ₦22,512.49, and ₦22,363.57 respectively. On the other hand, Yobe (₦19,030.00), Niger (₦19,154.99), and Nasarawa (₦20,000.62) were among the states with the lowest average prices.
Meanwhile, the Ebem Ohafia community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State has imposed a ban on the sale of cooking gas within its local market. The decision, reached after an emergency meeting of the Council of Chiefs and Elders, was formalised in a communiqué issued by the Ebem Ujurueze Palace, Ekeleugo Ebem.
The paramount ruler, Ezie Ukoha Kalu Ukoha, alongside other community leaders, explained that the ban was introduced as a precautionary measure to avert possible disasters and loss of lives.
In addition to the LPG restriction, the community leaders condemned rising social vices such as cultism, gangsterism, and drug abuse. They declared these practices illegal within the community and urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children. Property owners were also directed to evict tenants engaging in such activities or risk disciplinary action.
