Reps Move to Probe MOWAA as Edo People Applaud Iyawe’s Bold Motion

The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the establishment, funding structure, and governance framework of the Museum of West African Arts (MOWAA) in Benin City following a motion moved by Hon. Engr. Esosa Iyawe FNSE, the member representing Oredo Federal Constituency.

The motion, which drew widespread commendation from Edo residents and cultural stakeholders, sought transparency regarding donor involvement, financial commitments, and the legal implications of agreements tied to the multi-million-dollar project.

Following deliberations, the House adopted the motion and resolved to constitute an Ad-hoc Committee to undertake a comprehensive inquiry aimed at determining:

Public reaction in Edo has been overwhelmingly positive, with many residents praising Hon. Iyawe for championing transparency in a project deeply tied to the identity and cultural heritage of the state.

Stakeholders say the motion marks a significant step toward ensuring that the cultural and historical treasures of the Edo people — and Nigeria by extension — remain protected, accountable, and fully aligned with national interests.

Hon. Iyawe, speaking after the adoption of the motion, reaffirmed his commitment to defending the cultural integrity of Oredo and promoting transparency in all public-interest projects.

The Ad-hoc Committee is expected to commence investigative sittings in the coming weeks.
