Former Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Lagos, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has refuted claims that he abandoned the party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, by joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking on Sunday during Channels Television’s Politics Today, Rhodes-Vivour emphasized that Obi was fully aware of his decision to defect. He noted that he had kept Obi informed of his political plans, stressing that there was no secrecy in his move.

“Certainly, His Excellency was aware. A representative of his was even present at yesterday’s declaration,” Rhodes-Vivour said. “We are communicating and aligned. There’s no step being taken that he isn’t aware of. As I mentioned, we have all agreed that the only way for the opposition to succeed in the election is through a coalition. Regardless of current positions, we are working together towards that goal.”

The clarification comes shortly after the LP criticized his defection, describing it as hasty and ill-advised. The party, under Nenadi Usman’s leadership, argued that Rhodes-Vivour could have followed Obi’s example, who has continued to engage with opposition parties without leaving the LP.
