Wike Refutes Political Motive Allegations Over Land Revocations
According to Ireporter Online, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims that his land revocation policies are politically motivated. The minister made this statement during a courtesy visit by the board of the South-South Development Commission (SSDC) to his office in Abuja.
Wike emphasized his legal authority to reclaim and reassign lands from individuals or entities that fail to develop them or meet their financial obligations. He assured that his actions have always been guided by law and regulatory requirements, not political interests.
“I have never revoked land for political reasons, nor have I unjustly reassigned revoked land to anyone. Land can only be revoked if the owner fails to comply with development guidelines, neglects payment of ground rent, or abandons the property for years,” Wike explained.
The minister also criticized what he described as a culture of entitlement among Nigerians, noting that many citizens demand public services and infrastructure without fulfilling their own responsibilities. “People expect roads, services, and development without paying their dues. Waste is generated in homes, yet citizens expect the government to manage it for free. Development requires cooperation and compliance with simple rules,” he said.
Additionally, Wike cautioned the SSDC board against internal disputes and financial mismanagement, stressing that accountability must be maintained when funds are eventually allocated. “Unity exists now because there are no active projects or funds. However, once significant sums are released, improper spending could ignite conflicts,” he warned.
