Rapist Sentenced To 21 Years Imprisonment In Kano

The Court of Appeal sitting in Kano has upheld the judgment against a rapist sentenced to 21 years imprisonment.

The Court of Appeal, Kano division, presided over by Hon. Justice Habeeb Abiru JCA had on 28th June 2021 affirmed the judgement of Jigawa state High Court of Justice where one Mummuni Tukur, the appellant was convicted for the offences of rape and armed robbery

A press statement made available to our reporter Tuesday in Dutse, Jigawa state capital by the public relations officer of the Ministry of Justice, Zainab Baba Santali, said the judgement of the High Court was delivered on 8th April 2019, by Hon. Justice Umar Maigari Sadiq, now Chief Judge of Jigawa state.

She said during the trial, the appellant was charged under sections 298(b) and 283 of the Penal Code Laws of Jigawa state, 2012 for the offence of rape and armed robbery, and the end of the trial, the appellant was found guilty of the offences and was sentenced to 21-year imprisonment.

The statement further stated that the fact of the case were that, Mummuni Tukur, the appellant had waylaid a woman, name withheld, where he robbed and raped her at a bush called Shuga Bush in Kirkasamma local government area of Jigawa state.

“The appellant was apprehended by a good Samaritan and taken to the village head, which was later handed over to the police for investigation,” she stated.

She added that “Mummuni confessed to have committed the offences when he was interrogated by the Police”.

“The Appeal Court Judge, Justice Habeeb Abiru JCA dismissed the appeal as it lacks merit.”
