Addressing attendees at the 2025 Annual Thanksgiving Service of the Lagos State Government, themed “Harvest of Thanksgiving” at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism that both Lagos and Nigeria stand at the threshold of significant change.
“In 2024, we faced challenging yet essential decisions. With President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the helm, we undertook much-needed economic reforms to establish the groundwork for the Nigeria we aspire to,” the governor remarked.
Sanwo-Olu recognized the difficulties stemming from the reforms but stressed their long-term advantages. He noted improvements in public revenue, greater macroeconomic stability, and advancements in job creation, investment, and social welfare as signs of progress.
“We are witnessing the early signs of the positive impacts of these reforms. The rewards we await as Nigerians, following our collective sacrifices and resilience, will be immensely satisfying,” he stated.
He highlighted specific achievements of the reforms, such as the implementation of the new national minimum wage, which Lagos has exceeded. He also pointed to the Nigerian stock market’s noteworthy performance in 2024, where the All-Share Index surpassed 100,000 for the first time, reflecting economic recovery.
Additionally, Sanwo-Olu outlined Lagos’ accomplishments in 2024, positioning the state as a model of development. Key achievements included:
- The inauguration of the first phase of the Red Line rail project.
- Progress on the Blue Line rail project.
- Significant infrastructure projects, such as a large food and logistics park and one of Africa’s largest state-of-the-art children’s hospitals.
He also emphasized Lagos’ growing cultural and economic potential, amplified by the return of Nigerians from abroad.
“We have witnessed an exciting glimpse of the vast economic and cultural possibilities arising from the enthusiastic return of our citizens from across the globe,” he noted.
Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the contributions of the private sector, especially the commencement of petrol production at the Dangote Refinery and the groundbreaking of the 12,000-seat Lagos Arena, which he believes will transform Nigeria’s arts and entertainment landscape.
Looking to the future, he committed to increasing efforts across vital sectors in 2025.
“In Lagos State, we are acutely aware of our shared responsibilities, and we will intensify our focus on every sector, setting a benchmark for the entire nation. We are aligning with the President’s Renewed Hope agenda, and by collaborating effectively, we will ensure peace, progress, and socio-economic success for the people of Lagos State,” Sanwo-Olu affirmed
In closing, Sanwo-Olu expressed hopefulness, forecasting a brighter future for Nigeria under Tinubu’s reforms, and reaffirming Lagos’ intention to lead by example.
“Let us take forward the lessons learned from the past year and maintain the hope that, together, we can build a safer, more secure, and economically stable nation. The future of Nigeria is promising, and Lagos will continue to set the standard,” he concluded.
