FIFA Extends Ban On South Africa’s Themba Zwane Ahead Of 2026 World Cup

Zwane was dismissed in the 84th minute of Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 loss at the Estadio Azteca after a VAR review ruled that he had illegally raised his arm against Mexico winger Roberto Alvarado while South Africa were pushing forward in attack.

Although a straight red card typically results in a one-match ban, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee escalated the punishment, classifying the incident as serious foul play and adding two additional matches to the suspension.

The ruling remains open to appeal, but it leaves South Africa without one of their most experienced midfielders at a critical stage of the tournament.

The development comes after Bafana Bafana were already reduced to ten men during the encounter, with midfielder Sphephelo Sithole also receiving a red card.

Head coach Hugo Broos accepted Sithole’s dismissal but expressed strong disagreement with Zwane’s sending-off, arguing that the decision was too harsh and influenced by the referee’s positioning.

Mexico also ended the match with ten men after César Montes was shown a late red card, although the damage had already been done as the hosts secured all three points.

South Africa will now aim to revive their World Cup campaign when they face the Czech Republic in Atlanta on Thursday, following the Czechs’ 2-1 defeat to South Korea in their opening fixture.
