Valencia forward Sadiq Umar has disclosed that he is considering bringing his international career with Nigeria to an end, although he stressed that he has not reached a final decision.

According to reports, the 28-year-old striker revealed that he intends to carefully evaluate his future before deciding whether to continue representing the Super Eagles when the new football season begins.

Speaking during an interview with Radio France International Hausa, Umar explained that retirement from the national team is an option he is seriously contemplating but emphasized that he would take more time before making a conclusive choice.

His remarks come in the wake of widespread discussions surrounding Nigeria’s inability to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Reflecting on the disappointment, the former Almeria attacker admitted he could not pinpoint a specific reason for the failure but insisted that the focus should now shift to preparing for the next edition of the tournament.

Umar also responded to questions regarding his omission from recent Super Eagles squads, attributing it to the fierce competition for places rather than any personal issues. He acknowledged that Nigeria possesses an abundance of talented players and suggested that the coaching staff may have opted for individuals who better fit their current plans.

With the national team boasting increasing depth in attacking positions, competition for selection has become more intense, leaving several established forwards battling for regular opportunities.

Addressing speculation about whether his age or motivation could influence his decision, Umar maintained that he would use the coming months to reflect on what would best serve his career and help him remain at the highest level of football. He added that he hopes to make a decision that will enable him to sustain his career for as long as possible, drawing inspiration from the longevity of Cristiano Ronaldo.

For now, the striker insists no final verdict has been reached, with his future in the Super Eagles expected to become clearer after the start of the new season.
