The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has officially presented Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo as its deputy governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election in the state.

According to Ireporter Online, the unveiling took place on Monday at the PDP state secretariat in Abeokuta, where Sowunmi-Kolapo, a former Group Business Editor of The PUNCH Newspapers, was introduced as the running mate to the party’s governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu.

The event drew a large turnout of party leaders, stakeholders, youth groups, women associations and supporters from across Ogun State, reflecting heightened political activity within the party ahead of the next election cycle. Also in attendance was Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, whose recent political movements have continued to attract attention following her resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In her remarks after the unveiling, Sowunmi-Kolapo expressed gratitude to the PDP leadership for the confidence reposed in her, describing her nomination as a call to greater service. She pledged commitment to the party’s governorship bid and promised to contribute her experience in media, communication and public service toward what she described as rebuilding Ogun State.

She outlined a governance vision centred on economic growth, job creation, youth empowerment, improved education, healthcare delivery and infrastructural development, stressing that the party intended to restore hope and ensure inclusive development across all communities in the state. She also urged party members to remain united and intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the polls.

The PDP governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, described his running mate as competent, experienced and compassionate, stating that her emergence followed wide consultations within the party. He said the choice was aimed at strengthening the party’s chances in 2027 and presenting what he called a credible alternative for the people of Ogun State.

Adebutu also reiterated his confidence in the PDP’s chances, insisting that the party had learnt from past electoral experiences and was now better positioned for victory. He maintained that the PDP would focus on job creation, industrial growth, infrastructure development and improved welfare for residents if elected.

Speaking further, Adebutu expressed optimism that the party would emerge victorious, adding that internal cohesion had significantly improved compared to previous election cycles. He also used the occasion to criticise the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of underperformance and presenting the PDP as a more people-focused alternative.

The Ogun PDP Chairman, Dr. Abayomi Tella, also commended the selection, noting that Sowunmi-Kolapo’s background and experience would add value to the party’s ticket. He called on members to close ranks and intensify mobilisation efforts across all local government areas in the state.

Party supporters at the event described the unveiling as a major boost for the PDP, citing Sowunmi-Kolapo’s extensive experience in journalism, communications, and public affairs as a strategic advantage for the party ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
