Police Smash Drug Ring, Arrest Three, Recover Hard Drugs

The Command disclosed that its operatives have intensified statewide efforts aimed at dismantling criminal networks and strengthening grassroots security architecture. Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, stated that operatives of the Special Enquiry Unit intercepted a Mercedes truck at the First Niger Bridge Head in Asaba on June 3, leading to the arrest of the driver, Obinna Nwosu, 47, from Oba in Anambra State. A search of the vehicle, which was reportedly declared as carrying plumbing materials, resulted in the recovery of thousands of sachets of Tramadol in different dosages, Rohypnol, Codeine Phosphate tablets, Swinol, and MDMA, commonly known as Molly.

In a separate operation, officers of the Command’s Anti-Vice Squad raided a suspected drug distribution hub in Alegbo Community, Owa-Alero, Ika North East Local Government Area, where two additional suspects, Henry Edward and Okwudili Kingsley, were arrested. Items recovered from the scene included gallons of fermented cannabis mixture known as “Monkey Tail,” suspected Indian hemp, and other illicit drugs.

The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the operatives for the successful operations, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to sustained crackdowns on drug trafficking and related crimes. He noted that illicit drugs remain a major catalyst for cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent offenses.

He further emphasized the importance of community-based security collaboration, urging local government chairmen across Delta State to enhance intelligence sharing and grassroots engagement. This appeal was made during a strategic meeting with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Delta State chapter, attended by all 25 council chairmen and key stakeholders.

The Commissioner identified kidnapping, cult violence, communal clashes, murder, and land disputes as prevalent security challenges in rural and riverine areas, noting that tactical units have been deployed across all local government areas to improve visibility policing and rapid response. Local government leaders pledged continued cooperation with security agencies to strengthen peace and stability across the state.
