According to reports, the attack was part of a series of retaliatory strikes by bandits following the death of a notorious criminal leader in the region. Intelligence reports had warned the security forces of the attack, enabling them to swiftly engage the assailants in a gunfight. The attackers were forced to retreat into the forest, with some sustaining gunshot wounds.
One resident, Naziru Bakanike Mada, was injured in the shoulder and was taken to a medical facility for treatment. The attack was at least the fourth attempted assault on Mada by bandits seeking revenge for the killing of the bandit leader Alhaji Sani Dan Garin Bawo during a previous military operation. Since March 11, fighters loyal to the slain leader, ‘Dogo Hamza’, have been carrying out large-scale retaliatory strikes on Mada, though the security forces have consistently repelled their attacks, inflicting heavy losses.
A military official stated, “Mada is their burial ground; let them keep coming, and we shall continue sending them to their maker.”
