US Embassy Calms Fears: Visa And Passport Services Still Running Despite Shutdown

According to Ireporter Online, the United States Embassy in Nigeria has assured Nigerians that visa and passport services will continue uninterrupted despite the ongoing partial shutdown of the U.S. government.
The clarification, issued on Wednesday, came amid rising concerns that the budget impasse in Washington could affect student travel, visa appointments, and other consular processes in Nigeria.
In a statement released on its official platform, the Embassy explained that while its social media accounts may not be updated regularly due to the funding lapse, critical consular services remain operational. The notice emphasized that scheduled visa and passport services, both within the United States and at U.S. embassies worldwide, would continue as conditions permit.
The Embassy also advised Nigerians to rely on travel.state.gov for accurate and updated information on visa processing, passport applications, and other travel-related matters.
The shutdown, which began after U.S. lawmakers and President Donald Trump failed to reach a budget agreement, has led to the suspension of several federal agencies, leaving only essential services like the military, postal services, Social Security, and food assistance programs in operation.
President Trump defended the closure, arguing that it would help reduce funding for programs backed by Democrats, particularly in the area of healthcare.
While reiterating that its consular operations remain functional, the U.S. mission encouraged Nigerians to closely monitor official communication channels for timely updates as the situation unfolds. The announcement is expected to calm fears among many Nigerians seeking to travel for study, business, or leisure.
