He explained that watching the Super Eagles face Argentina, led by football legend Lionel Messi, during the 2018 FIFA World Cup deeply influenced his choice.

In an interview with NBC Sports, Bassey recalled how the match, which ended in a 2-1 loss for Nigeria, strengthened his connection to the team. Seeing his former teammate Kenneth Omeruo play in that game further fueled his desire to join the squad.

“I saw the greatest player ever, Messi, play against my country, and it was an incredible moment. That game made me want to be part of the Nigerian team,” Bassey said.

The defender also highlighted the immense pride that comes with representing Nigeria, stating that he did not hesitate when the opportunity arose.

Since joining the Super Eagles, Bassey has earned 29 caps and played a key role in Nigeria’s runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
