FG Confirms Nigerian Sustained Injuries In Qatar Gas Explosion

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed that Nigerian national, Jubril Akorede Abdulrahman, who sustained injuries during the recent explosion at a gas facility in Qatar, has been discharged from the hospital and is currently recuperating.

According to a statement issued by the commission, Abdulrahman is recovering at accommodation provided by his employer following his release from medical care.

The incident occurred on June 21, 2026, at the Barzan Gas Supply Facility in Ras Laffan, Qatar. Reports indicate that the explosion happened at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time at the Qatar Energy-operated facility.

Providing updates on the incident, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, confirmed the circumstances surrounding the explosion, while Qatar Energy later stated during a press briefing in Doha that the incident was accidental and not linked to sabotage or any hostile activity.

The company also disclosed that the facility had only recently resumed operations after undergoing a scheduled maintenance shutdown that began in December 2025. Emergency response teams from Qatar Energy, alongside the Qatar Civil Defence, swiftly responded to the scene and successfully contained the fire.

The explosion reportedly left 66 people injured, including citizens of Qatar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, India, and Nepal. Authorities noted that none of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries.

Reacting to Abdulrahman’s recovery, NiDCOM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed gratitude over his discharge and extended her sympathies to those still receiving medical attention.

She said the commission was encouraged by Abdulrahman’s steady recovery and prayed for the quick healing of all other victims affected by the explosion.

Dabiri-Erewa also urged Qatar Energy to continue providing comprehensive medical support and welfare assistance to Abdulrahman and every injured worker until they fully recover.

The commission further commended Ambassador Yakubu for his prompt intervention and consistent monitoring of Abdulrahman’s condition following the incident, describing his efforts as a reflection of the quality consular services expected for Nigerians living abroad.
